Global Mobility & ERASMUS+: Promotion of ERASMUS+ Programmes and Fostering Cooperation in Higher Education in Under-represented Countries in Eastern Africa

Background

Eastern Africa has many countries unrepresented in the ERASMUS+ fraternity, among them Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Seychelles, Somalia, and South Sudan. This pilot project aims at promoting the ERASMUS+ programmes, especially Erasmus Mundus and International Credit and Staff Mobility programmes, in under-represented countries in Eastern Africa and it will serve as a launching pad for increasing cooperation in the field of Higher Education between Eastern Africa and the European Union.

The project will be implemented as a seminar on the 11-12th of April at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. This expert seminar will gather university officials; ERASMUS+ alumni; and representatives from the African Union and European Union to provide capacity building and to steer improvements in Higher Education in the region (and in Africa at large) by promoting ERASMUS+ to countries in Eastern Africa which have little or no representation in the programme. Additionally, it purposes to make recommendations to the strategy on intra-Africa mobility, which is currently in the beginning phase.

2-day seminar objectives:

  1. To promote ERASMUS+ and to widen participation in Eastern Africa
  2. To boost diversity in ERASMUS+
  3. To increase international cooperation between the AU, EU and Eastern Africa in the Higher Education field
  4. To facilitate discussions, networks and partnerships that will help to steer improvements in higher education
  5. To discuss and provide recommendations to the international donors on how to support International Higher Education
  6. Increased participation in ERASMUS+ programmes through newly established credit, degree and staff mobility agreements
  7. Over 300 students newly informed about ERASMUS+ opportunities
  8. Supporting international cooperation through the formation of new and strengthening of existing networks and partnerships
  9. Improvements in Higher Education by fostering international cooperation which encourages shared experiences from diverse parts of the world

Expected outcomes:

  1. Increased participation in ERASMUS+ programmes through newly established credit, degree and staff mobility agreements
  2. Over 300 students newly informed about ERASMUS+ opportunities
  3. Supporting international cooperation through formation of new and strengthening of existing networks and partnerships
  4. Improvements in Higher Education by fostering international cooperation which encourage shared experiences from diverse parts of the world
