Young Change Makers Inter-University Seminar INTER-UNIVERSITY SEMINAR HELD AT KU (2)

The 30th Young Change Makers Inter-University Seminar on Sustainable Tourism took place at the Business and Student Services at Kenyatta University on the 30th November 2019. The event also celebrated the Young Change Makers and Mentees in Sustainable Tourism in Kenya. The program was Started in 2017 and the main aim of the programme is  to create young sustainability ambassadors, empowered with sustainable tourism knowledge and skills that are required in the industry.
The STTA Young Change makers is an extension learning program that targets and actively engages university students in sustainable tourism development. The objective of this collaborative program that involves universities, the public sector, private sector and civil society is to mentor a generation of youth who have the capacity to provide leadership in sustainability of tourism. The program creates safe spaces where youth can be engaged for knowledge, can be motivated and inspired to be involved and can apply their creativity in problem solving.

In 2019 over 16 universities across Kenya participated in the program as follows:  Kenyatta University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Murang’a University, Technical University of Mombasa, Pwani University, Chuka University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Amboseli Institute, Mount Kenya University, Kenya Methodist University, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Machakos University, University of Nairobi, Kenya Utalii College, United States International University – Africa and Technical University of KenyaAmong the 16, 12 of the Universities hosted the program in their institution from January 2019 to November 2019 while Kenyatta University hosted the final one for the year on 30th November 2019 with highest students and industry participation. Every hosting university had their own discussion theme and at Kenyatta University the discussions revolved around the Opportunities for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions in enhancing Sustainable Tourism Development in Kenya.


During the event, there were Awards and recognitions for both the students, institutions and faculty. Kenyatta University was recognized and appreciated as an STTA hosting university while Dr. Shem Maingi (a lecturer in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management) received a recognition medal as an STTA mentor 2019.
